Commercialisation and Utilisation

DMTC’s policy on commercialisation and utilisation provides a clear mechanism for our industry partners to adopt and utilise IP developed through DMTC projects. The policy concentrates on promoting active engagement in project development activities by industry partners who, as end users of the technology, have an interest in ensuring the technology is developed along commercially relevant lines. DMTC’s strategic partnership with both large and small industry participants and thorough understanding of Defence requirements assists in developing a clearly articulated pathway to utilisation prior to each project commencing. This utilisation pathway is continually revisited and refined in regular project reviews to ensure project directions maintain the maximum degree of industry relevance.

Managing Intellectual Property

DMTC’s IP policy streamlines the adoption and utilisation of technology developed under DMTC program activities. The policy articulates Core Participants rights for utilisation of the IP created in projects as part of the corporate agreements, thereby removing the need for negotiation of usage licenses after the IP has been developed. Supporting Participants IP rights are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Each project facilitated by DMTC is managed carefully with particular emphasis on IP capture, including regular project reviews which actively identify any newly created IP. In addition, all project team members are provided with an ‘IP Factsheet’ which sets out the basic tenets of DMTC’s IP policy, discusses the key factors surrounding IP that are pertinent to the development of DMTC Project Agreements and explicitly covers background IP, project IP and use field to assist researchers in the identification and management of IP developed in each project. Importantly, DMTC is committed to adhering to the National Principles of IP Management.
